How We Started

image
After working together on other farms, as well as running our own businesses, Christa and Mike joined forces in 2009 to form Bahner Farm. They were married on the farm on July 4th, 2010. They were delighted to add Lizzy to our family in the spring of 2011 and Nicky in the fall of 2013.

Christa

Christa worked on several Maine farms before deciding to go back to school to study Plant and Soil Sciences at UMass Amherst. In late 2007 she started Double Bit Farm with Molly Crouse as part of the MOFGA Farmer-in-Residence Program and spent two years farming with Molly in Unity.

Christa’s favorite veggies include Sungold tomatoes, sugar snap peas and asparagus. She loves hiking, camping, ice skating, and swimming outside as much as possible.

Her primary responsibilities over the years have been farmstand and farmers market management, marketing, administration, greenhouse production, harvest, and wash pack managment. After running the farm with Mike for 15 years, in 2025 she became the primary farm manager.

Mike

Mike met Mark Guzzi of Peacemeal Farm while in school at UMaine Orono. He worked at Peacemeal for four years, learning the ins and outs of the organic vegetable production business.

He loves welding, tractors, and anything you can hook up to a tractor. His farm-grown favorites include Hakurei summer turnips, beets, and Striped German tomatoes. In the winter he also manages to devote some time to skiing, and lots of hockey with the kids.

Over the years, his primary responsibilities have been repair and maintenance, field management, compost production, and planting. In 2025, he stepped back from the farm to work full time in welding.

Farm Crew

Every year, we have between 10-12 folks working here on the farm with us.

About 4-6 folks work with us on farm production, which includes seeding, planting, harvest, washing, packing, field maintenance, weeding, pruning, trellising, and so much more.

Another crew of 4-6 folks helps run our farmstand, working hard to keep it clean, well stocked, and organized for you all, as well as answering all your farm and garden questions.

Bahner Farm wouldn’t be here without the hard work of the many, many folks who have worked here over the years. Over 60 folks have worked with us since 2009. Whether they stay for one year or five, they have all been essential parts of the farm.
